Everybody knows that regular exercise is good for the body, but more and more evidence is demonstrating that regular exercise can also keep your IQ in shape. The physical science behind this claim is simple « Being fit means that you also have good heart and lung capacity and so your brain gets plenty of oxygen »
But what is the best exercise to do ? of course the clever answer is….. ‘why just do one ?’ The trend from the entrepreneurial world is currently towards Triathlon
But what makes the Triathlon such a popular sport for Entrepreneurs ?
Below are a few key points about triathletes and triathlon in general – I will let you decide if you see any similarities with that of the Startup……
Most serial triathletes have Type ‘A’ personality
The theory describes a Type A individual as ambitious, rigidly organized, highly status-conscious, sensitive, truthful, impatient, always try to help others, take on more than they can handle, want other people to get to the point, proactive, and obsessed with time management. People with Type A personalities are often high-achieving « workaholics » who multi-task, push themselves with deadlines, and hate both delays and ambivalence.
Swim, Bike, Run with changes on the clock in-between, if you are not strong in one sport, you can make it up in another, play to your strengths, or work hard at your weaknesses. The triathlon environment permits competitors to plan and develop a race strategy to optimize their strengths, play with their frame of mind and ultimately measure their position against the others.
Pushing your limits
In theory a competition is all about you versus the other competitors, but in reality its just you versus you.
How well did you plan ? How hard can you push ? How long can you continue ?
If you want an objective enough, even at the end of an Ironman you can somehow find the strength to complete your objective – its all about mental attitude.
High cost / Low cost
Its pretty simple to bootstrap your way into Triathlon, go running in the streets, swimming in public pools, second hand bike, but there comes a point when you are ready to invest and at that point the world of professional Triathlon is ready for you !
An average Ironman competition costs around 500€ just to take part (…wait you go through all that AND you have to pay to do it ?!?!) and the top elite athletes are all on carbon fibre, electric gear ultra-lightweight bikes which can cost up to 10k€
I could go on, its possible to draw many parallels between triathletes / triathlon, entrepreneurs / startups as both take strong willed, smart people operating in a fun, dynamic environment. So as leader of the fastest growing club Triathlon club in the Paris region, I am lucky to be able to be part of both worlds at the same time.
